Architecture itself is balance: the perfect balance between art and function

Taiyuan Jiancaoping Courthouse

Location: Taiyuan, Shanxi

Scale: 211,327 sqf - 19,633 sqm

Time: Design completion June 2013.

Status: Preliminary Design

The general program includes: 12 small courtrooms, 2 medium courtrooms, 1 medium trial room and 1 large courtroom. The distribution analysis shows that 2 small courtrooms have the same area to one medium courtroom, and 2 medium courtrooms have the same area as 1 large courtroom. The relation is also given in the height of the spaces, having single height for the small courtrooms, but double height for the medium and large courtrooms.

The South and the North facades create a dualism and balance by complementing each other. The South facade is strong and heavy, like a mountain, while the North facade is transparent and clear, like water.

The North facade of the building is the building’s main facade and entrance, where the public comes in from and the first impression that visitors will have of the building. The pedestrian perspective of the North- West facades of the building shows the relation between interior and exterior.

Also, the facades show the concept of dualism between the ideas of the clearness and transparency of water and the solidness and weight of a mountain. The South facade reflects the idea of the mountain, showing itself strong and solid.
